Two Shot Monday Attending Vigil For Fatal Victim Of Pink Saturday Shooting, Trial Date Set For British Police Officer And Former Mr. UK Gay, Rainbow Lounge Raid A Year Later, Wisconsin Supreme Court To Rule Wednesday On Gay Marriage And Civil Unions Ban

There are reports that two people were injured Monday evening attending a vigil for a man killed Saturday in San Francisco during the city’s Pink Saturday pride celebration. Police say the shooting occurred around 8:00 pm during a vigil held in the Castro District for 19 year old Stephen Powell, who was killed Saturday, a 21 year old man shot through the cheek and a 20 year old man shot in the leg. Both were taken to hospital, where they remain. Police say their injuries are not life threatening. 20 year old Ed Perkins remains in police custody charged with one count of murder in connection to Saturday’s fatal shooting spree.

United Kingdom police constable Mark Carter appeared at Leeds Crown Court Tuesday, charged with one count of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted sexual assault following an incident that took place over two days in December, 2009, at the Etap Hotel in Leeds. A trial date was scheduled for December 13th. Carter, openly gay, who was crowned Mr. Gay UK in 2006, is to appear in court on September 7th, at which time he will enter a plea.

One year after a badly botched raid on The Rainbow Lounge by Fort Worth, Texas police and by the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission that left one patron of the gay bar seriously injured, Fort Worth Police Chief Jeff Halstead attended a barbecue dinner at the Rainbow Lounge. David Schrock, the owner of the gay bar, says he welcomes the improved relationship between the gay community and the police, the event on June 28, 2009 seeming to galvanize the Fort Worth LGBT community.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court is expected to rule Wednesday on a lawsuit before the court that argues the 2006 constitutional amendment banning gay marriages and civil unions is in violation of the constitution, and therefore not valid. The lawsuit claims that the measure violated the state constitution by asking two questions at the same time on the same ballot. According to the constitution, ballot questions must be limited to a single subject. If the court rules to strike down the amendment, gay marriage would not become legal, since the state’s constitution was amended to define marriage as that existing only between one man and one woman.
