Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig ruled Thursday that he will not overturn umpire Jim Joyce’s mistaken call and award Armando Galarraga a perfect game. Selig could have reversed the call that came with two outs in the ninth inning Wednesday in Detroit, a simple ground out that Joyce ruled Cleveland Indians’ Jason Donald safe when he clearly was out; Joyce admitting after the game he got the call wrong. If anything good can come of the awful, it is the deportment of Tigers’ pitcher Armando Galarraga and Jim Joyce, who have both behaved with a gentleman’s generosity and grace.

IGLHRC is an international gay rights advocacy group, spokesperson Cary Alan Johnson saying that the group is “disappointed by the vote of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations to block action on our application.” She added that the decision was a “clear case of discrimination against an organization because it defends the human rights of LGBT people around the world.” IGLHRC filed the application three years ago to the U.N. Economic and Social Council, and it is thought a delegation of country’s comprised of the United States and several European nations will lobby the Economic and Social Council directly to access accreditation.
