Chicago Blackhawks Determined To Reclaim Word Gay As Most Mean Taunt Ever
The Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup last week, besting the Philadelphia Flyers in game six to win the team’s first cup since 1961. It’s nice and all, but, um, prior to Wednesday’s game six, the Chicago Tribune published what it called “a very special” poster print edition that featured Flyers’ power defensemen Chris Pronger photo shopped to appear to be wearing a figure skater’s skirt, the caption reading “Chrissy Pronger: Looks like Tarzan, skates like Jane.” Offensive on its own, of course, 2010 the year, NHL the worst run professional sport, in dire need of an audience to survive, and homophobia, well homophobia so last century. The Tribune’s actions were called shameful, sexist, etc, but now a picture taken in the dressing room of the Cup winning team suggests that the Tribune was merely repeating what the Blackhawks think of Pronger, behind and to the right of Jason Toews and Patrick Kane, on the team’s whiteboard, next to Pronger’s name, the word “gay.”
