Calgary Hosts First LBGT Prom
Calgary, Alberta is hosting its first LGBT Prom this Saturday, sponsored by Gay Calgary Magazine, whose publisher Steve Polyak says that “knowing that teenage suicide is very high among the gay and lesbian youth, having something that they can attend and that they can feel comfortable at is a very positive thing.” The event itself was organized by James Demers, a co-chair, who said that “we were thinking: Over the last 30 years, who hasn’t been able to enjoy prom night? And it ends up being a lot of people, really.” All proceeds from the event – scheduled for Saturday night at the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Centre beginning at 8:00pm – will go towards to the Miscellaneous Youth Network, which works with gay youth under the age of 25, offering resources and support.
