The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal began to hear arguments Thursday in the case of a marriage commissioner who refused to marry a gay couple in 2005 because gay marriage, while legal, contradicted his religious beliefs, an attorney for Orville Nichols, Michael Megaw arguing that the law should not require marriage commissioners to perform ceremonies that conflict with their privately held religious beliefs because it forces them to “park their rights at the door.” The province has provided the court with two legislative options for the court to consider. One would see a special provision for marriage commissioners appointed prior to 2004 when the Court of Queen’s Bench ruled gay marriage legal in the province to opt out of performing same sex marriage if it’s against their religious beliefs. The second would see a religious exemption for all marriage commissioners. The court could rule that both options are unconstitutional, arguments continue Friday, and the court is expected to reserve its decision.

A new report created by a coalition of civic groups suggest that the number of gay men and women murdered in Mexico has risen despite a campaign of tolerance by the government and a gay marriage law enacted in the capital city.
