Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, America’s top uniformed military official, said Wednesday that he believes it is now time to repeal the military ban on gay men and women serving openly. “Personal opinion? I believe it’s time. I believe we need to change it,” said Mullen, while addressing an audience at the Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. Thursday, the Senate Armed Services Committee intends to vote on overturning the 17 year old ban.
Admiral Mullen’s announcement arrives as Arizona Senator John McCain, who is opposed to the repeal, solicited and obtained a letter signed by all four leaders of the Army, Air Force, Marines, and Navy objecting to a compromise reached by the White House and leading Democrats Monday that would vote to repeal the policy, and that asks for a delay on voting until after a December 1st deadline, at which time a Pentagon commissioned review of the implementation of a repeal of the military ban on gays serving openly would be completed.
