Portugal President Signs Gay Marriage Bill Into Law, France Requests World Health Organization Remove Transsexuality From Mental Illness List, Jamaica Protest Against Homophobia, Kevin Spacey, Edie Falco, Brazilian Bulges, Cristiano Ronaldo

Portugal President Anibal Cavaco Silva announced Monday that he is ratifying a law allowing gay marriage in the predominately Catholic country, Silva sanctioning a bill passed by Parliament in January, making Portugal the sixth European country to afford same sex couples the right to wed. The bill was backed by the Socialist government, and was supported by all of Portugal’s left of center parties, who, together, hold a majority. Right of center parties, however, opposed the bill, and requested a national referendum. Had the president vetoed the bill, it would have been returned to Parliament, where legislators would simply overturn his decision. Silva said that the country needed to focus on more critical issues, including an economic crisis, fuelled by high unemployment and widening poverty.

France has written the World Health Organization, requesting that transsexuality be removed from the WHO official list of mental illnesses. France also is partnering with the Netherlands and Norway to free up funds to finance an international campaign to prevent homosexuality being punishable by law. Bernard Kouchner and Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin, France’s ministers of foreign affairs wrote that “France remains steadfast in its battle against stigmatisation and human rights violations, Many victims of these all around the world are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender.” In 2009, France became the first, and to date, the only country in the world to remove transsexuality from its list of mental illnesses.

A small, but significant protest Monday morning in Jamaica, gay activists joined by human rights activists at the entrance of Emancipation Park in New Kingston, in an effort to mark the International Day Against Homophobia.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Stanley Tucci and Carla Gugino have been added to the cast of Margin Call, which also stars Kevin Spacey and Zachary Quinto, whose Before The Doors Pictures is producing. The film is set in an investment bank during a 24 hour period during the 2008 financial collapse.

From the Daily Beast, an odd Edie Falco interview conducted by Kevin Sessums, Falco talking about her fight with addiction and breast cancer, the adoption of her two children, and her unending love of Carmela. Sessums, speaking about Falco’s large lesbian fan base, asks her whether she is or is not gay, Sessums saying “Have you ever buttered that side of your toast?” to which Falco replies “I beg your pardon! I am so not going there. Wow. I’ve never heard it put that way either. But no. I’m afraid I like boys.”

There are apparently a number of reasons to watch the new Brazilian night time drama Passione, but none bigger that two of the stars – Caua Raymond and Kayky Brito - who each display amble, um, bulges.

Cristiano Ronaldo, writhing. I think.
