Openly Gay 24 Year Old Wins Kentucky Democratic Primary, More Details On Trial Of Two Gay Malawi Men, Homophobic Jason Akermanis Says He Is Not, Shirtless Ryan McPartlin, Zac Efron, Jake Shears, New Sister Scissors Video

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that Matthew Vanderpool, a “24 year old with no college degree, beat a patent lawyer and Air Force veteran in a race to challenge incumbent Republican state Rep. Stan Lee in Lexington’s 45th District.” Vanderpool, who is openly gay, raised an estimated $150.00 in campaign finances, and who won without any advertising or one single yard sign. Vanderpool, who has been accepted to the University of Kentucky in the fall, said “It was just a shock for us to win this” and said that the victory was the result of “talking to everyone I meet and being very accessible to people.”

The New York Times covers the trial of the two gay Malawi men convicted Tuesday of unnatural acts and gross public indecency, Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga held in custody since their arrest two days after holding an engagement ceremony on December 28th. According to the Times, “Malawi, a deeply impoverished, landlocked nation of 14 million, has also received international condemnation for prosecuting the two gay men. But most of its leaders – political and religious – have reacted with defiance. Last month, President Bingu wa Mutharika was quoted as calling homosexuality ‘evil and bad before the eyes of God’ and act ‘we Malawian just do not do.’ Magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa Usiwa, in delivering Tuesday’s judgement in a small courtroom in Blantyre, the country’s commercial capital, was similarly stern. He referred to the crime as ‘buggery,’ using language from when Malawi was a British colony and the current law was written. He found both men guilty of ‘carnal knowledge’ that was ‘against the order of nature.’ He said the two had been ‘living together as husband and wife,’ which ‘transgresses the Malawian recognized standards of propriety.’” The two are scheduled to be sentenced May 20th.

The Sydney Morning Herald says Australian Football League player Jason Akermanis is now defending his article advising gay players to remain closeted because the game – and by extension, the public – is not ready for an openly gay athlete. Akermanis, who writes a weekly column, wrote that “if a player wants to out himself, then I say good luck. But I believe the world of AFL footy is not ready for it. To come out is unnecessary for a lot of reasons.” After the article appeared Thursday morning – an article that hints Jason is homophobic – he told a television news program that “there’s been a little bit of a gay hunting going on where we’re trying to get people to come out. I’m not sure that’s very safe and healthy for the competition.”
