The American Civil Liberties Union announced Monday that it is joining a lawsuit that argues same sex couples do not possess full equality under New Jersey’s civil unions law, the New Jersey chapter of the ACLU saying that the law “has failed to fulfill the actual promise of equality.” In 2006, the New Jersey ruled that gay couples have the right to equal treatment, but left the details of the law up to the Legislature, which responded by legalizing civil unions. A bill to legalize gay marriage was defeated by the State Senate in January.
Joe Mosca was elected mayor of Sierra Madre, California Tuesday, and the first openly gay mayor in the San Gabriel Valley. Mosca, 37 years old, an attorney for the Southern California Gas Company, was joined Tuesday by his parents, visiting from Rhode Island, and his partner of eight years, Dr. Matt Bosse, and the couple’s son Garrett, who will turn 3 years old this month. Mosca, in an acceptance speech, said that he would “like to thank my partner Matt, who is absolutely my strength in life and always gives me the ability to focus on what’s important in life, and my son Garrett, the little red-head right there who is up past his bedtime. Just one look in his eyes and his smile, it just really makes you make you feel like the world is perfect.” Mosca’s sexuality was not an issue with voters, and the mayor-elect said that fact “should be a source of pride” for the town.
Elton John is scheduled to appear May 18th in Egypt, but the country’s Musician’s Union is calling for the cancellation of the concert because the 63 year old performer recently said that he could imagine Jesus as a gay man, and that all religions should be banned because they traffic in discrimination and repression. Those sentiments contradict a central tenet of Islam, which condemns homosexuality.
Madonna graces the cover of the June edition of Interview magazine, inside she is interviewed by Gus Van Sant, telling the director she loved Milk, the two talking about her ex-husband Sean Penn, Malawi, her directorial debut Filth and Wisdom, her new film W.E. Gareth Thomas talks to the Guardian about being newly out, newly divorced, and traded to a new team, the rugby icon caught in a quiet moment of contemplation. Thomas speaks about his supportive relationship with ex-wife Jemma and her family, which he says has “been brilliant.” Thomas also says that his own family could not be more supportive, and that he never actually came out to his mother and father. “I don’t think I’ve ever told them I’m gay, says Gareth, “When me and Jemma spilt they kind of put two and two together. At the time I couldn’t really say the word ‘gay’ because I wasn’t ready. Now I know they know and so we haven’t had the big dramatic conversation. When I announced it publicly I asked them if they wanted to read the article first but dad said, no, it was OK. I went to see them the night it came out and I thought they’d be tired. But mum insisted on opening some champagne. She said it was a celebration of the rest of my life and so there I sat, drinking champagne with them, thinking how daft I’d been to worry for so many years about them finding out.”
In anticipation of June’s World Cup of Soccer, Vanity Fair goes deep, profiling the sport, and perhaps most importantly, the players, including the beautiful Alexandre Rodrigues Da Silva, or Pata, who plays for Brazil, and just became a new favourite crush, and the smoking sexy Cristiano Ronaldo. All the players, thankfully, photographed by Annie Leibovitz in little more than their nation’s flags. Below, the curly-haired cutie Alexandre spotted attending the first annual Champions for Children gala in Milan, Italy on April 8th.

Johnny Weir spotted Saturday attending the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby, doing the Derby as only Johnny can.
