Massachusetts Catholic Elementary Withdraws Admission Offer Because Eight Year Old Parents Are Gay, GLAAD Demands Newsweek Apology For Ramin Setoodeh Ridiculous Rant, Broadway Babe Charlie Williams, Lasse Larsen, Robbie Wadge, Scott Herman

Officials from St. Paul Catholic Elementary School in Hingham, Massachusetts has withdrawn the acceptance of a 8 year old boy because the child has two mothers, the school saying their homosexual relationship is “in discord” with the teachings of the church, that according to one of the women who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of concerns about the effect of unwarranted publicity on her son. The boy was scheduled to start grade three this fall, but the women said she learned the admission was rescinded during a conference call Monday with Principal Cynthia Duggan and parish priest, the Reverend James Rafferty. “I’m accustomed to discrimination, I suppose, at my age and my experience as a gay woman,” said the mother, “but I didn’t expect it against my child.” She said she was told that the by the principal that the teachers would not prepared to answer questions her son might have since the school’s teachings about marriage contradict what he sees as his family. According to one of the mother’s the family does not attend mass regularly, however the they wanted their son to have a strong education as well as one that underlined Christian values, like compassion and empathy. The two added that they are well aware of the church’s stance against homosexuality, but given the church's “many variations of tolerance” like the inclusion of families of divorce, which the church continues not to recognize. “There are many different non-traditional families that fall under the umbrella of the Catholic Church and I guess we assumed we fall under one of those,” said one of the boy’s mothers.

GLAAD has issued a statement regarding Ramin Setoodeh’s baffling, bewilderingly homophobic Newsweek piece that suggested gay actors cannot play straight, but straight actors can play gay, GLAAD saying the article “sends a false and damaging message about gay actors by endorsing the idea that there are limits to the roles they are able to play.” The statement also thankfully points out that whatever Setoodeh’s intention – and I doubt it was to “start a discussion” of any kind – his thesis articulates a perspective “used to pressure actors to stay closeted.” GLAAD has joined with Ryan Murphy in demanding an apology from Newsweek.
