“Ex-gay” turned anti-gay George Alan Rekers posted a statement via his webpage Wednesday that is equal part deep denial and deep dumb.“A recent article in an alternative newspaper cleverly gave false impressions of inappropriate behaviour because of its misleading innuendo, incorrectly implying that Professor George Rekers used the Rentboy website to hire a prostitute to accompany him on recent trip,” reads the entry, adding that “contrary to internet stories based on this slanderous article, following medical advice Professor George Rekers requires an assistant to lift his luggage in his travels because of an ongoing condition following surgery. His family, local friends, and even another university professor colleague have offered to accompany him on trips to assist him in his travel. Dr. Rekers found his recent travel assistant by interviewing different people who might be able to help, and did not even find out about his travel assistant’s Internet advertisements offering prostitution activity until after the trip was in progress. There was nothing inappropriate with this relationship. Professor Rekers was not involved in any illegal or sexual behaviour with his travel assistant.”
Catholic Archbishop Dadeus Grings said Wednesday that child sex abuse scandal facing the Roman Catholic Church is emblematic of social woes, and that “society today is pedophile, that is the problem. So, people easily fall into it. And the fact it is denounced is a good sign.” Grings, who is also the chancellor of the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, condemned the abuse within the church, but said the internal punishment of priests found guilty of abuse sufficed, and that a police investigation was unwarranted. “For the church to go and accuse its own sons would be a little strange,” Grings said. The oddest, most offensive statement was that archbishop’s contention that it is important to aid children in avoiding homosexuality. “We know that the adolescent is spontaneously homosexual. Boys play with boys, girls play with girls. If there is no proper guidance, this sticks. The question is – how are we going to educate our children to use a sexuality that is human and suitable?” Predictably, Grings managed to equate homosexuality to pedophilia, saying “when sexuality is trivialized, it’s clear that this is going to affect all cases. Homosexuality is such a case. Before, the homosexual wasn’t spoken of. He was discriminated against. When we begin to say they have rights, rights to demonstrate publicly, pretty soon, we’ll find the rights of pedophiles.”
Wednesday, the House of Deputies in Argentina approved a measure legalizing gay marriage, and sent the legislation to the Senate for consideration. President Cristina Fernandez has said she will not veto the measure should it reach her desk. Five gay couples have married in Argentina, judges having argued that the Latin America country’s constitution supports freedom of choice for couples, however most of those marriages have since been annulled, deemed illegal.
The producers of The Temperamentals – an award winning play about five closeted gay men who formed a pre-Stonewall gay rights advocacy group, starring the unsinkable Michael Urie – announced Wednesday that the show will close May 30th, after three months of performances. The off-Broadway production will be honoured this month with a Drama Desk Award for outstanding ensemble performance.
