Clay Aiken On Normalizing Coming Out, John Waters On Extreme Saints And Extreme Taste, India Courts Gay Travellers, Nicolas Ripoll, Most Beautiful Men Of Italy, Five French Beauties On The Beach, Rafael Nadal Shows His Best Side

Clay Aiken, ahead of summer tour alongside American Idol cohort Ruben Studdard and in anticipation of new album, Tried and True, a collection of standard songs from the fifties and sixties, says that he has never seen Glee, and would like to collaborate with both Cyndi Lauper and Trisha Yearwood. Aiken says, surprisingly, that since coming out few fans have confided in Clay that his coming out of the closet has helped those struggling with their own sexual orientation. “Not so much, says Aiken, “it is helpful and I understand why it could be helpful. But I think the more fuss is made about it the less it normalizes it. The truth is that being gay is not news. It should be something that we strive to normalize. It’s nothing we need to broadcast. It’s a fine line. I do understand the benefit but I hope for the days when it is not news and not a headline.”

John Waters, whose new book Role Models, examine the American auteur heroes, which include Johnny Mathis and Saint Catherine of Siena, of whom Waters says “she believed that pain was the way to heaven. She drank the puss our of sick people’s hospital rooms. She whipped herself. That kind of religion is staggering to me. If I am going to pray it’s always to Saint Catherine of Siena, the most insane saint that there ever was.” The director of Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble laments the demise of bad taste, but celebrates the birth of extreme taste. “I don’t even think there is bad taste anymore,” Waters says. “American humour is bad taste – that’s what we import, that’s what television is about, reality television is based on that. I think it kind of ruined bad taste, because you’re asked to feel superior to the subject matter, which I don’t ever think I do. I think I always look up to my subjects, which is maybe what good taste is. Extreme taste is more interesting to me now than good or bad.”
