United States Army Secretary John McHugh says that the military is considering a system for soldiers to anonymously express their opinions regarding the policy that prohibits gay men and women from serving openly. “We’re trying to do this in the quietest way possible, and by that, I simply mean not to sensationalize it, to try to really assess the soldiers’ opinions, said McHugh Friday, speaking in Hawaii, adding that “anonymity, of course, is an important aspect. McHugh made the comments alongside Lt. General Benjamin Mixon, who ran afoul of the Obama administration, when he urged the troops to lobby to keep the ban on openly gay military service in place, the two speaking at the 25th Infantry Division’s headquarters where it was announced that an estimated 800 soldiers from the division would be deployed to Iraq by the end of 2010.
