Boston Archdiocese Says It Welcomes Children Of Same Sex Parents, Pope Benedict Says Gay Marriage Among Most Dangerous Threats Today To Common Good

Late Thursday, the Archdiocese of Boston released a statement regarding the rescinding of an offer of admission to an 8 year old boy by St. Paul’s Elementary School in Hingham, Massachusetts after school officials decided that the boy’s lesbian parents presented a contradiction to the core teachings of the Catholic Church. Mary Grass O’Neill, secretary for education and superintendent of Catholic schools, said that the archdiocese does not prohibit children of same sex parents from attending Catholic school, and that the archdiocese will “work in the coming weeks to develop a policy to eliminate any misunderstandings in the future,” adding that Catholic schools “welcome children based on their parents’ understanding that the teachings of the Church are an important component of the curriculum and are part of the student’s educational experience.”

Meanwhile, the presumptive head of the Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI, speaking in Fatima, Portugal, reiterated the belief that marriage should be founded on the “indissoluble” marriage of a man and women, and that sex same marriage and the right to an abortion were among the “most insidious and dangerous challenges that today confront the common good.” The comments were hardly random – three years ago Portugal decriminalized abortion and the country is about to legalize gay marriage.
