Juan Jose Martinez Matos, the man Puerto Rico prosecutors contend brutally murdered openly gay Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado late last year, has pleaded guilty, confessing to the crime in Caguas on Wednesday. Matos was scheduled to stand trial starting Monday, May 17th, but opted to confess, telling the courtroom that he understood the consequences of his actions. He was immediately sentenced to 99 years in prison. Martinez, according to prosecutors, stabbed the teenager to death prior to decapitating, dismembering, and burning the body. He then left Mercado’s body along the side of a remote road November 12th, 2009. Jorge Mercado was 19 years old. Myriam Mercado, Jorge’s mother, said “we are able to find a bit of peace in this aspect, but it still not going to return Steven. But at least there is justice in Puerto Rico.”

Tuesday, Jim Corcoran, an openly gay former alter server at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cobourg, Ontario, who filed a complaint with the province’s Human Rights Tribunal claiming he was removed from his volunteer position because of his sexual orientation, and Peterborough Bishop Nicola De Angelis, signed a confidentiality agreement after mediation with the Tribunal concluded. According to previous reports, Corcoran has asked that the 12 parishioners who initially made the complaint that prompted his removal donate $20,000 to a charity of his choosing, as well as asking for $25,000 to cover legal costs.

TalkingPointsMemo.com is reporting that George Alan Rekers officially offered his resignation Tuesday from the board of NARTH, the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, an organization that proffers that idea that homosexuality can and should be cured.

The two confessed to spray painting “fags don’t belong “and a swastika.
