Statements made Monday in Santiago, Chile by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, that “there is a link between homosexuality and pedophilia” has elicited condemnations from activists, doctors, and politicians, Patricio Walker, a Chilean senator who co-authored anti-pedophile laws saying “I would like to see the scientific studies he said he has, because I don’t share this evaluation...I have the impression that he is wrong on this point.” Hugo Gurierrez, a communist deputy said “the linking is wrong. Celibacy does more damage to a human being than homosexuality, which is a freely made choice. I’m shocked by these words from a senior dignitary.” Aurelio Mancusco, the past president of the Italian gay rights group Acrigay said “the truth is that Bertone is clumsily trying to shift the attention to homosexuality and away from the focus on new crimes against children that emerge every day.”
Tuesday, three gay California couple filed a lawsuit against the state’s public pension fund and the federal Internal Revenue Service to make long-term care insurance available to the same sex spouses of California government employees. The three are all legally married in the state, and their attorneys argue that the California Public Employees Retirement System is acting in violation of the couple’s civil rights, denying them eligibility for the program. According to a spokesperson for pension fund, long-term care cannot be offered because the program must follow the federal law – specifically the Defense of Marriage Act – which does not recognize same sex unions.
Jennifer Knapp, a 36 year old Christian music star, has come out. Knapp, whose last album was released in 2001, and which was nominated for a Grammy award for best rock gospel album, is releasing a new album on May 11th that is more mainstream adult orientated instead of Christian, Knapp, who still considers herself a person of faith, contending it would be “disingenuous” to try to pretend that her sexual orientation can be reconciled with Christian consumers and radio stations. Knapp has sold millions of records since her 1998 debut, has toured with the Lilith Festival, has won multiple Dove awards (gospel music’s top honours) but has spent most of the last decade in Australia, in a sort of self-imposed seclusion, and now returns to music an Australian citizen and, perhaps most importantly, with a new found sense of truth.
Rufus Wainwright, in an interview with Details magazine, says he is sure that 50 Cent is gay. “I love, love 50 Cent. I think he’s just the sexiest, and a brilliant writer. And I know he’s gay,” says Wainwright, adding “That cute little voice of his. Its okay, 50 Cent. Feel free to call me anytime. My boyfriend and I are experts. You can come over for dinner. And maybe dessert.”
