15 year old Cole Goforth was sent home from Greenbrier High School, in White House, Tennessee Monday for wearing a tee shirt that read “I Heart Lady Gay Gay,” a play of the name Lady Gaga. School administrators told the young man, who identifies as gay, to go home and change because the tee shirt was “going to cause a disruption in the school.” His mother, Julie Gordon, says the her son has worn shirts with the word “gay” on them before without problems, and she contends that the conflict is less about a dress code and more about her son’s sexual orientation. “I think they are singling him out, I really do,” says Gordon, “And they’ve made statements that if he wore this in California, he’s fit in just fine.” Administrators, without specifics, said that they made the request to change the tee shirt because of fight that occurred at school the week before, Danny Weeks, assistant director of the school board saying “we’ve had a few disruptions the last few days, and we thought the slogan on that shirt would continue to escalate those incidents that occurred.” Cole Goforth has another perspective, saying “I just think my sexuality isn’t widely accepted around here, so of course they are going to single me out.” Cole’s mother, according to the Robertson County School Board, can appeal the decision.
