From Tennessee, proposed legislation sponsored by Republican Representative Stacey Campfield of Knoxville that would in practice prohibit the teaching of homosexual relationships in state public schools was sent back to the Board of Education, after the House Subcommittee studying it said that the contention by Campfield is a “figment of his imagination.” Campfield says he has proof that certain school systems have removed software filters from class computers allowing access to websites that push the notorious gay agenda. In 2009, the American Civil Liberties Union took the Knoxville and Nashville school systems to court because both were blocking access to educational LGBT sites. The case was settled out of court, the ACLU proving that the sites filtered were instructional and not harmful to minors or obscene.

From Texas, Tarleton State University drama major John Jordan Otte’s production of Terrence McNally’s Corpus Christi, cancelled after community protests over the play’s suggestion imaging Jesus to be gay, will now be staged in Fort Worth, at a much larger venue – the 250 seat Rose Marine Theater, scheduled for sometime in May. The play, a part of final project in a directing master class, was chosen by Otte, he said, “because I am gay and have been alienated from the church that I loved for so long. For me and many other people ... we have a disconnect with religion. This play was very touching to me. I cried when I read the script, and it gave a more tangible Christ figure for me.” While the private performances of all four plays, including Corpus Christi were cancelled because school administrators cited concern for student safety, Otte contends it was censorship, and the producer of the Fort Worth staging, Adam Adolfo agrees. “This is about censorship, says Adolfo, “I would show this support if it were any number of things. It’s not about gay, it’s not about religion. It’s about censorship.”

Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with a non-invasive form of breast cancer, but the prognosis for recovery is excellent. A lump was found in January during a routine mammogram, a biopsy in February revealing the cancer. She underwent a lumpectomy in March and will being a six-week course of radiation in May. Navratilova is scheduled to work as a commentator for the Tennis Channel during the French Open, and she intends to keep that commitment while undergoing radiation therapy in Paris at the same time.
