Fox News personality and failed Republican candidate for president Mike Huckabee in an interview with The Perspective, the College of New Jersey student paper, underlined his opposition to repealing the American military ban on gay men and women serving openly, saying that the policy “touches an extraordinarily small group of people,” that the Obama administration’s attempts to amend the policy is “primarily a posturing point for political purposes,” and an attempt “to force something on the military that they themselves haven’t pushed that hard.” The former governor of Arkansas also reiterated his opposition to gay rights, saying that civil unions are “not necessary,” adding “I think there’s been a real level of being disingenuous on the part of the gay and lesbian community with their goal of civil union,” implying that marriage or the “corruption” of traditional marriage was the LGBT activists fundamental goal. Predictably, he presented an analogy between homosexuality and drug addiction, incest, and polygamy. “You don’t go ahead and accommodate every behavioural pattern that is against the ideal,” Huckabee said of gay marriage. “That would be like saying, well, there are a lot of people who like to use drugs, so let’s go ahead and accommodate those who want to use drugs. There are some people who believe in incest, so we should accommodate them. There are people who believe in polygamy, so we should accommodate them.” Finally, one of the presumed Republican candidates for president in 2012 defended his home state of Arkansas’ archaic adoption law that prohibits same sex couples from either adopting or becoming foster parents. “I think this is not about trying to create statements for people who want to change the basic fundamental definitions of family. And always we should in the best interest of the children, not in the seeming interests of the adults. Children are not puppies.”
Despite suffering a popular perception of being one of the most homophobic sporting events, the Australian Football League partnered with the Players’ Association has initiated an “inclusion and diversity” campaign, the players, according to reports, knowing how it feels to suffer negative stereotyping and that they want to help another group of “maligned individuals.” The project, not scheduled to be launched until May 17th, the
International Day Against Homophobia, is already being considered a success since nearly thirty players and coaches have already agreed to participate.
