There are reports that Tuesday on Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly said he will personally pay the 16,500 in court costs that the father of a fallen Marine must pay to the Westboro Baptist Church, after a court overturned a previous ruling. Although the motivation behind O’Reilly’s generous gesture remain a mystery, some speculate that O’Reilly is in fact protesting the guaranteed right to free speech. Albert Snyder sued the
WBC, who picketed 20 year old Matthew Snyder’s funeral in 2006, protesting that the young man’s death was God’s retribution against the American military for allowing gay men and women to serve in the armed forces, albeit closeted. Albert Snyder successfully sued in federal court, and a jury awarded his nearly eleven million dollars in damages for invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress. However, late last week, a United States Court of Appeals overturned the verdict sighting the
WBC’s First Amendment right to free expression. The elder Mr. Snyder is taking the case to the Supreme Court, which agreed to hear it during the October, 2010 term. “This is an outrage,” said O’Reilly of the ruling against Snyder, “I will pay Mr. Snyder’s obligation. I am not going to let this injustice stand. It’s obvious that they (the
WBC) were disturbing the peace by disrupting the funeral. They should have been arrested, but our system is so screwed up, so screwed up, that looks are allowed to run wild.”
