Australian Olympian Daniel Kowalski has come out. The 34 year old, who won four Olympic medals in swimming, including three at the 1996 Games, saying that he has been inspired by the recent coming out of Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas, so much so that he contacted Thomas, Kowalski saying that the conversations left him feeling “excited and relived” for Thomas, but also “anger because I was jealous ... he was out and felt liberated and free.” Kowalski suggests that not coming out during his career might have negatively impacted his accomplishments, saying “I always knew that I lacked confidence when I stood up on the blocks and I do wonder sometimes if that lack of confidence was fear – fear of not really knowing who I am.”
A report on New York City’s newest gay scene, Skin Tight USA, an occasional party held at the Stonewall Inn, celebrating super heroes and the skin tight costumes that they don. The story underlines a secluded revolution of sorts, the movement of gay characters in comics. Unfortunately, buried in the piece is news that Showtime has decided to drop its proposed television adaption of Hero, the novel by Perry Moore, that was optioned by the network and Stan Lee, who still holds the rights and intends to get the project made.
Wednesday, meanwhile, industry stalwart DC Comics announced that Batwoman, the genre’s first lesbian superhero, is getting her own title, Batwoman and her alter-ego Kathy Kane, making history as the first continuing series to star an openly gay character.
