In Virginia Tuesday evening, a bill that would have banned any and all employment discrimination against state employees was effectively killed by a Republican ruled House subcommittee. Democratic Senator Donald McEachin sponsored the bill after the newly elected Republican governor, Bob McDonnell, issued an executive order forbidding employment discrimination that omitted discrimination based on sexual orientation. The state’s two previous Democratic senators had structured protections for gays in the state workplace.
This failure arrives at a time when Virginia’s reputation for inequality and intolerance stands to impact the state financially, gay advocacy group Equality Virginia revealing a letter from openly gay Maryland Senator Richard Madaleno who wrote the CEO of Northrop Grumman Corporation asking that they locate the company’s corporate headquarters in Maryland instead of Virginia because Virginia legislators continue to go about “dismantling the few protections “afforded to gays and lesbians.
American Supreme Court Justice John Robert Tuesday refused to grant a stay to opponents of gay marriage in Washington, D.C., a coalition of pretend Christians seeking an injunction to the law about to take effect because, they argued, the issue should be placed on a referendum and voted on by the electorate. In Seattle, 22 year old Adnan Basher Osman and 21 year old Abdinasir Ahmed have been charged with committing a felony hate crime, after a man was attacked January 3rd, at the city’s Filipino Community Center.
