In San Mateo, California, students from Hillsdale High School are preparing a counter-rally to a planned picketing by everyone’s favourite band of hate mongers – the Fred Phelps led Westboro Baptist Church. The WBC is scheduled to protest the Hillsdale production of The Laramie Project on March 27th. 16 year old Aaron Chacon, a junior as well as a cast member, says the WBC is free to protest, but that he hopes “my school community will be able to understand ... we are able to counteract hate without provoking hate,” adding that students will silently march past picketing Westboro Baptist members. “It’s essentially using love to protest hate,” said Chacon.

A report on a new study commissioned by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development – HUD – to examine discrimination nationally in the sale of rental of housing to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and the transgendered. The report’s finding will be released in the spring of 2011, Assistant Secretary Raphael Bostic, who is heading the study, saying “our goal is to provide information – to allow the dialogue to focus on facts rather than preconceived notions.” HUD conducts a major study of discrimination once every ten years, but this is the first time it will examine sexual orientation and gender identity.
