Parents Protest Colorado Catholic School’s Decision Not To Allow A Pre-Student To Re-Enrol Because Their Parents Are Lesbian, Barriers To Full Gay Equality In The District Of Columbia, Cyndi Lauper Free Toronto Pride Week Concert In The Park, Academy Award Wrap Up, Chris Pine, Zac Efron, Final Calvin Klein X Range Underwear Ad

In Boulder, Colorado Sunday, protesters gathered outside the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, there after the affiliate school announced it was refusing to allow a pre-schooler to re-enrol because the student’s parents are lesbian. Inside the church, Father Bill Breslin explained that the decision was made “to protect the faith over doing what would have looked like the loving thing to do. So the decision I made was based on my conviction that we needed to rest on the side of backing our beliefs and our values. We need to fight for our Catholic values, because here in Boulder, it seems no one else is.” Colleen Scanlan Lyons, one of those protesting said “I have a daughter that goes to school at Sacred Heart. I’ve had 16 years of Catholic education, and this just reached the core of my being as completely wrong and against the teachings of Jesus.”

A reminder that while gay men and women can, as of last Wednesday, legally marry in the District of Columbia, because of the federal Defense of Marriage Act which defines marriage as that only existing between a man and woman, and the military ban on gays serving openly, contradictions litter the landscape with one obstacle in obtaining equality removed, but many others remaining.

Toronto Pride, celebrating its 30th year, announced that Cyndi Lauper will be performing during the week-long celebration of all things gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender, Cyndi’s concert July 3rd at Queen’s Park a free event.

The Hurt Locker won big at the 82nd annual Academy Awards, winning six Oscars, including Best Picture, and perhaps most importantly Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow becoming the first woman in history to earn the honour. Sandra Bullock won Best Actress, and gave a surprisingly moving speech, mentioning the need for equality, including sexual orientation, as well as a tribute to her late mother. Jeff Bridges won Best Actor, and gave an odd, substance fuelled speech. Not surprisingly, Mo’Nique took Best Supporting Actress and Christoph Waltz Best Supporting Actor. Two of the evening’s most enjoyable wins were those by Logorama, which took Best Animated short film and The Cove, a stunningly sad look at the secret slaughter of dolphins in Japan, which took Best Documentary. The best moment of the night: a promotional for Modern Family, in which the families gathered to play charades – an economic 30 second spot of pure genius.

Both Bea Arthur and Farrah Fawcett were each left out of the annual Academy Award In Memoriam segment, a rather big oversight given the pop cultural place the two occupy.

Chris Pine spotted arriving at the Oscar ceremony, looking typically fabulous and fine.

The final, extended version of the Calvin Klein X Range Underwear campaign has been released, featuring Kellan Lutz, True Blood’s Mehcad Brooks, Spanish tennis star Fernando Verdasco and Hidetoshi Nakata, a famed Asian footballer, and it is, teasing and sexual, likely to garner complaints.
