Harold Ford Jr. wrote an opinions piece for the New York Times Tuesday explaining that he will not be running for the Democrat party seeking the United States Senate seat for New York. The decision comes after the wealthy Ford, a former Tennessee congressman, had taken a “listening tour” of the state that did not go well. Famously, as congressman, Ford voted for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, but recently, in advance of making a decision on running in New York, said he, without explanation, that he now favoured gay marriage.
Literally days before a law sanctioning gay marriage takes effect in Washington, D.C., opponents of same sex marriage requested that the Supreme Court stay the law, arguing that the electorate should be afforded the right to vote on legislation allowing gay marriage. Lower courts have all rejected the argument. Couples may apply for licences beginning Wednesday, and there is a three day wait period before the licences can be used.
