The Fresno City College administration has determined that Brad Lopez, a health instructor “engaged in conduct that could result in the creation of a hostile learning environment by unreasonably interfering with students’ learning by making insulting comments directed at homosexuals.” The findings, enclosed in a letter addressed to two students – Jacqueline Mahaffey and Jay Matthews – whose petition initiated the investigation against the instructors, will presumably now force the college to discipline the instructor who informed students that homosexuality was a mental disorder and suggested gays were the source of society’s woes.
On Saturday, for the third time in as many years, GLAAD bestowed an award for the best daytime drama to a show that essentially discriminates against gays, this year’s recipient – One Life To Live – having announced that it is writing off its lead gay characters because advertisers found the storyline tested negatively with focus groups. GLAAD previously honoured As The World Turns, which infamously introduced two gay characters – Luke and Noah – and then refused to let them kiss on air.
A company that created the concept of gay cruise lines – RSVP Vacation – is celebrating its 25th year with a Silver Anniversary Cruise in Hawaii. The Minneapolis based company began in 1986 with an all-gay cruise.
A Dallas County jail guard who was fired after allegedly making anti-gay remarks and referencing religion reportedly believes his right to free speech was violated but he will not take action to seek re-instatement. In October, 2009, 59 year old Stephen Johnson, interrupted a private conversation among jail staff, interjected his opinions, to tell them that all gays should be annihilated, that according to a sheriff’s department review. In a sworn statement, Johnson said that he did not say he supported slavery, but added that “slavery is a fact in the Bible,” and continued that he believes “all dinosaurs were born of Satanic angel who has sex with women and the animal kingdom that created ungodly reptilian creatures none of these were on the Ark.” Johnson also stated that he did not believe in homosexuality and “that they all should be put to death.” He was fired on January 20th, 2010, after seventeen years of service.
Karl Lagerfeld is interview by Bruce LaBruce (one of the very few actual artists in Canada) and the Vice cover story contains several interesting Lagerfeld-isms, including that Lagerfeld is against gay marriage, telling LaBruce “Yes, I’m against it for a very simple reason: In the 60s they all said we the right to the difference. And now, suddenly, they want a bourgeois life ... And I also believe more in the relationship between a mother and a child than in that between father and child.” Karl also intones on love and sex, saying that he only sleeps with the best prostitutes. “I personally only like high-class escorts,” says Lagerfeld, “I don’t like sleeping with people I really love. I don’t want to sleep with them because sex cannot last, but affection can last forever. I think this is healthy. And for the way the rich live, this is possible. But the other world, I think they need porn. I also think it’s much more difficult to perform in porn than to fake some emotion on the faces as an actor.”
Shia LaBeouf graces the cover of the April GQ – unfortunate, since his Oliver Stone directed Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps has had its release date pushed back to the fall rather than this spring – but inside Shia talks about the manic director and poses in a series of tight fitting suits.
