Constance McMillen, the 18 year old Itawamba County Agricultural High School senior from Fulton, Mississippi, who in November, 2009, sought permission to bring her girlfriend to prom as well as to wear a tuxedo – requests denied the principal – appeared Friday on CBS’s The Early Show, alongside Christine Sun, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, there to talk about the school’s decision Wednesday to cancel prom altogether rather than allow McMillen to attend. That decision came a week after the ACLU sent school administrators a letter contending that McMillen was well within her rights to bring her partner to prom. Instead of challenging the school’s archaic policy of anti-gay discrimination and demonstrate an intelligent understanding of right and wrong, the school, trying to hide its obvious homophobia, punished everyone. Constance is so articulate and so authentic that she shames most everyone else, especially anyone and everyone who opts to live in the closet. She has a voice – clear, distinct, and powerful. There is a Facebook group and you should join and support Constance.

Results found that the majority of viewers (77%) believed that the school’s actions were an act of discrimination. Furthermore, the vast majority of viewers (88%) indicated that the actions by the school were not appropriate.
