Nepal is navigating new tourism ground, the conservative country offering gay couples the opportunity to marry at the base of Mount Everest, all in an effort to attract the lucrative pink dollar to the beautiful, but impoverished nation. And while the tourism campaign is rooted in commerce, it does serve as an indication that in a very short time – five years – Nepal, which has an openly gay parliamentarian, issues third gender identity cards, and it is rewriting its constitution to expand and strengthen gay rights, likely even to include the legalization of same sex marriage, has evolved. In fact, the openly gay Member of Parliament, Sunil Pant, Nepal’s most prominent gay activist, is championing the campaign to make the nation the new destination for gays.
In Gainesville, Florida, anonymous opponents of mayoral candidate Craig Lowe have distributed fake fliers mocking his sexual orientation. The fliers, ignorant and offensive, started to appear a week ago Sunday, left on cars outside a city Baptist Church. One read “Please help to make this town more like San Francisco, CA. Don’t let Traditional Value Activists use scare tactics against you!” Lowe, who has yet to decide whether to file a formal complaint, said “when someone poses as operating on your campaign’s behalf and is doing so in a manner to damage the campaign, I think that’s something that is very disturbing in the electoral process,” adding that “the biggest recourse is with the voters.” The election is Tuesday.
