In Bulgaria, six gay activists – members of the youth organization Lesbians, Gay, Bi- and Transgender in Action – were assaulted after they arrived in the city of Pazardzhik to protest an order by the local city council barring the display of homosexuality in public. An estimated one hundred young men – local skin heads – attacked the group, yelling “go to Uganda freaks,” but were quickly arrested by police who were there to protect the gay activists.
Republicans have quite quickly denounced the health care reform protestors gathered in Washington, D.C. who targeted black and gay Democratic legislators, yelling homophobic and racist slurs, as well as spitting, calling the events “isolated” and “reprehensible.”
The combination of Washington, D.C. legalizing gay marriage and neighbouring Maryland’s Attorney General’s opinion that the state should recognize same sex marriages performed elsewhere has sent hundreds of Maryland gay couples migrated to Washington to marry.
