The New Hampshire House has rejected two anti-gay marriage proposals, the first an amendment to the state constitution that would define marriage as that only existing between a man and woman, the second, a bill repealing the state’s same sex marriage law that is shy of being two months old. The two votes were overwhelming a majority – the House bill final tally was 210-109 against and the constitutional amendment tally was 201-135. Prior to the vote being taken, Representative Robert Thompson, a Democrat from Manchester, who is openly gay, and who married his partner on January 2nd, asked rhetorically, “how has my marriage impacted upon your marriage or how has it diminished the value of your marriage?” Republican Representative John Cebrowski, of Bedford, said “the vast majority of adults out there know marriage is between man and woman. To engage in the flight of imagination ... with adults is downright cruel.”
Judge Sylvia Pressler, who, in 1975, opened Little League play to girls, and, in 1995, extended the legal rights of gays in America when she ruled that a woman could legally adopt her partner’s 3 year old son, has died. She was 75.
As threatened, the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. has formally terminated its foster care program run in partnership with the district, citing the passage of gay marriage legislation passed in December, expected to take effect in March. The program was 80 years old, ended because the Catholic Church does not recognize gay marriage, and would therefore not recognize the right of married same sex couples seeking to adopt.
