Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast, an annual event held in Washington, D.C. has garnered an unusual amount of attention, and it is likely not welcomed. The host of the event, The Fellowship, aka The Family, a former closeted secret society, is one of the obvious sponsors the Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 and the groups anti-gay activism is the antithesis of anyone’s concept of Christianity. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a government watchdog group, have asked President Obama and members of Congress not to attend, as well as asking C-Span not to televise the event. Melanie Sloan, the executive director of the group, said that “it is a combination of the intolerance of the organization’s views, and the secrecy surrounding the organization. It doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be allowed to hold their breakfast; of course they should. The question is, Should American officials be lending legitimacy to it, giving their imprimatur by showing up.”
The supposed compromise constructed by Democrats and Republicans in Utah – an agreement that no action would be attempted on gay equality legislation, including efforts to undo employment and housing anti-discrimination ordinances passed in Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County – threatens to come undone. Republicans are concerned that a study on the discrimination faced by gays, lesbians, and transgender in the state is actually an attempt by Democrats to bypass the truce and have in place legislation to be proposed in 2011.
