Malawi Police Hunt For Gay Rights Activists While International Advocacy Groups Plan Pressure, Anti-Gay Reggae Singer Scheduled For California Concerts, Scott Fujita Does Not See Eye To Eye With Tim Tebow, CBS Helped Craft Focus On The Family Script

Police in Malawi are searching for a group of gay activists secretly mobilizing to orchestrate a campaign meant to familiarize and inform the public about gay rights. On Saturday 21 year old Peter Sawali was arrested, caught distributing and pasting pro-gay rights posters in Blantyre. He remains in police custody pending an investigation, and authorities say he will likely be charged with breech of the peace, which can carry a sentence of three months in jail. Police are still seeking other members of the group Broad Coalition, whom they contend are responsible. International gay advocacy groups have hinted that they will begin fighting the battle in Malawi for gay rights and force politicians to consider changing the country’s deeply homophobic laws, action precipitated by the arrest of Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza December 27th, after the two tried to marry in a traditional ceremony. They two, 21 and 26 years old, remain in custody without bail, held for their own safety according to the courts. They are to appear in court February 5th.

For reasons that defy logic, violently anti-gay Jamaican reggae performer Capleton is booked for three concerts in California beginning in mid-February in San Diego. Capleton, whose lyrics espouse the maiming and killing of gays, was scheduled to appear in three California cities in 2004, but those concerts were cancelled after an outpouring of anger.

Scott Fujita, New Orleans Saints linebacker continues to be one of the most impressive gentleman athlete, the 30 year old who is on record repeatedly supporting gay rights, taking issue with both the Tim Tebow anti-abortion advertisement for Focus on the Family set to air during the Super Bowl Sunday, as well as CBS’s decision not to air an ad for gay dating site ManCrunch.com. Scott said of the Tebow ad, “the idea of focusing on the family, who wouldn’t agree with that? But the means of doing so, he and I might not see eye to eye all the way.”

Reports, meanwhile, that CBS worked closely with Focus on the Family in scripting the commercial, a spokesperson for the anti-abortion, anti-gay group saying that “there were discussion about the specific wording of the spot. And we came to a compromise. To an agreement.”
