Toronto mayoral candidate George Smitherman and his husband Christopher Peloso announced Sunday that they have been approved in principle by Toronto Children’s Aid Society to a adopt a child, a 14 month old boy. The process is likely to take up to another six months, and Smitherman, who is Vancouver at the Olympic Games with Peloso, said “Christopher and I are very proud to share the news. Despite our overwhelming joy at the prospect of being parents to a beautiful baby boy, we must ask for you complete cooperation in respecting our privacy and the important legal process that governs our potential adoption.”
Toronto Maples Leafs and United States Men’s Olympic team General Manager Brian Burke returned to work Friday, Burke the father of 21 year old Brendan who was killed in an automobile accident last Friday. At a press conference in Vancouver, Brian said he is coping, somewhat, saying “I cry less every day. It’s been ... it’s been tough.” When asked to describe the brave Brendan, who came out publically in November, 2009, Brian said “He was a courageous kid, a very gregarious kid, a very compassionate kid. He was very bright and cared a lot about people. The saddest part about it was that his future was so bright. The sky was the limit for this kid.”
The Washington Post’s media critic Howard Kurtz profiles the openly gay Rachel Maddow, who refutes the idea she is assuming the role of gay rights activist – employing her position as a member of the media, and her MSNBC show to drive the conservation regarding the efforts to repeal the American military ban on gays serving openly. Rachel does, however, concede an obvious fact: “I can’t do the show as a non-gay person,” says Maddow, “I don’t have that option.”
Despite being an exercise in futility – four Iowa Democratic Senator broke with party ranks and joined the Republicans, signing a petition to force a vote on same sex marriage. The amendment to the state constitution would alter a law passed in Iowa last year legalizing gay marriage by defining marriage as that only existing between a man and woman. However, the deadline for any bill to clear committee and being considered for vote this year passed last week. Iowans continually insist that gay marriage is a non-issue and that they would rather elected officials concentrate on more pressing matters, like the economy.
Wednesday, the New Hampshire House will vote on whether t o repeal the state’s barely six week old gay marriage law, as well as whether to amend the constitution to define marriage as that only existing between a man and a woman. It is unlikely either proposals.
Augusta, Georgia is getting gayer, an announcement that a Gay Pride festival, including a parade, has been planned, the event to occur for the first time since the 1990’s.
