Another of the worst kept secrets is spilled - Canadian Conservative Member of Parliament John Baird outed Tuesday morning by Pamela Taylor on CBC Toronto’s Metro Morning radio show. Taylor, who is running to replace openly gay George Smitherman in the riding of Toronto Centre, who resigned his provincial seat to run for the mayor of the city, was asked by host Andy Barrie to name one openly gay Conservative politician at either the federal or provincial level, and she chose to out Baird. Baird, who has never discussed his sexual orientation publically, has been vocal in his condemnation of the Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009.
A report on the political backlash by those who oppose the move to repeal the American military ban on gays serving openly, led by social conservative oddity and anti-gay hate monger Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, an organization that has little to no connection to the military policy. Perkins began circulating a petition over the weekend, ahead of Tuesday’s announcement by Defence Secretary Robert Gates and Admiral Mike Mullen, Perkin’s petition titled Prevent the Sexualisation of our Armed Forces, arguing that lifting the policy of “don’t ask, don’t tell” would pose an “unacceptable risk to the high standards or morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion.”
Pope Benedict’s comments condemning British equality legislation meant to protect gay men and women and prevent employment discrimination ahead of his scheduled visit to Britain has angered secularists, who are now demanding that the Vatican cover the cost of the Pope’s September tour and not taxpayers. Terry Sanderson, the president of the National Secular Society, says “I am sure many others feel the same resentment as we do at the National Secular Society at funding the presence of someone who wishes to impose a reactionary agenda of social change on us.” The society and other organizations are planning a number of protests.
