There will be a moment of silence prior to tonight’s NHL game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators in honour of Brendan Burke, the 21 year old son of Toronto GM Brian, who bravely came out publically last November, and was killed in a car accident Friday afternoon. Burke, a former goalie, was the student manager of the University of Miami, Ohio men’s hockey team, and had aspirations to work at the professional level, enacting change and creating an environment of acceptance and inclusion.
Students at some high school at the Winston Churchill High School in Potomac Thursday received a pamphlet from the group Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays alongside their report cards. According to a settlement in a 2006 lawsuit, the schools in the district are required to distribute information from any registered non-profit four times a year, as long as the material remains outside the parameters of what would be deemed hate speech. The organization advertises that “every year thousands of people with unwanted same-sex attractions make the personal decision to leave a gay identity,” a statement that contradicts the Board of Education’s health curriculum.
