Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan William Tuesday took the opportunity of his address to the General Synod to call for all members of the Church of England to demonstrate a tolerance and understanding over issues of gay equality and female bishops. Those two issues threaten to divide the church, conservative factions warring with liberals, and Williams urged members not to demonize Anglicans who opt to form breakaway organizations. Sadly, Williams’ plea for acceptance and for the continual creation of framework that is inclusive, the bishop of Uganda, Henry Orombi, demanded that the Church of England show support for his country’s horrific Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009.
The New York State Senate Tuesday expelled anti-gay marriage and serial domestic violence offender Hiram Monserrate, a Democrat from Queens, who was convicted last fall of misdemeanour assault after he attacked his girlfriend.
Despite already having a ban on gay marriage, West Virginia legislators are addressing an amendment to the state’s constitution that would define marriage as that only existing between a man and a woman. The amendment is still in committee and both Democrats and Republican want the amendment sent to the House for debate. House minority leader, Tim Armstead, a Republican, said “a number of states throughout the country have recognized homosexual marriage and we think we need a safeguard to keep that from happening here and we think the people of West Virginia want that safeguard, so there’s frustration out there, and we think it should be brought to the House and debated.”
