South Africa’s The Star reports that the nation’s Democratic Alliance pleaded with President Jacob Zuma not to appoint one Joe Qwelane as the South African ambassador to Uganda because it would appear as an endorsement of that country’s continual efforts to persecute and purge homosexuality since Qwelane is a notorious, well-documented homophobe. Democratic Alliance spokesperson Lindiwe Mazibuko said that Qwelane is “a committed homophobe and his appointment could be seen as a tacit endorsement of the repressive stance Uganda is taking on homosexuality.”
