Stanford University political science Professor Gary Segura took the stand Wednesday, to testify on behalf of the plaintiffs at the federal trial challenging the constitutional validity of the California same sex marriage ban, Segura an expert on the political vulnerabilities of homosexuals. Gay marriage opponents contend that gay men and women have made substantial political gains and hold new political power, an argument that Segura refuted, saying homosexuals have “no meaningful’ strength. Segura also argued that President Obama is “not a reliable ally” for gay and gay equal rights, as evidenced by his refusal to support gay marriage or repeal the military ban on gays serving openly, under cross-examination saying “I think President Obama is perhaps the best illustration of an ally who can’t be counted on, an ally whose rhetoric far exceeds his actions.” While Segura testified, lawyers for the plaintiffs introduced documents detailing active involvement of churches in the Proposition 8 campaign, including ones illustrating the unprecedented role of the Mormon Church in passing the voter initiative.
