Day four testimony in the federal trial challenging the constitutional validity of Proposition 8 began with testimony from Edmund Eagan, the chief economist of the city of San Francisco, a witness for the plaintiffs, who outlined that banning gay marriage in California harms local governments around the state, creating negative financial impact. Columbia Professor Ilan Meyer then took the witness stand, and testified on the mental impact on gay couples prevented from marrying, noting the prevalence of subtle societal disapproval evidenced in filling out forms that request a marital status.
Judge Vaughn Walker, presiding over the trial, said Thursday that he is foregoing attempts to broadcast the trial via the Web. He suggested that he did not want the issue to distract from the trial.
Police in Chelmsford, Massachusetts are investigating a Facebook posting promoting an event called “kill all gay people” on Chelmsford High School network scheduled for January 19th. The posting is replete with grammar and spelling mistakes, saying "ever one that s gay dies,” and includes a picture of men hitting someone with a sticks and is labelled “attack on a gay individual in Iraq.”

It should go without saying that a person should be allowed to marry whomever they choose. Until the right-wing, religious fanatics in this country stop trying to control everybody else and force their “morals” down the throat of the country, there can be no real freedom in the United States. Civil rights cannot simply be "voted away," that is the purpose of the Bill of Rights. Religious activists should be left out of these decisions completely.
