Proposition 8 Federal Trial To Be Televised Time-Delayed, Portugal Parliament To Legalize Gay Marriage

Chief United States District Judge Vaughn Walker, presiding over the federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the California gay marriage ban, announced that the trial will be recorded, then uploaded to YouTube later the same day. Walker contends that the case, which begins Monday, January 11th, in San Francisco, is important in terms of interest to the public at large. The plaintiffs of the case wanted the entire trial to be televised live, the defendants wanted none of it to air, so that Walker’s decision is regarded as a compromise.

Parliament in Portugal Friday is expected to approve a measure making gay marriage in the predominantly Catholic and conservative country. Miguel Vale de Almeida, the country’s first openly gay legislator, said “I think Portuguese people have learnt one of the fundamental tenets of democracy: respect for the rights of the individual.”
