Parliament in Portugal passed a measure Friday that will make the predominately conservative Catholic county the sixth in Europe to permit gay marriage, the bill passed by a vote of 125-99. The law is merely a matter of semantics – language from the current law was changed from to indicate that marriage as being between two people of different sexes – nonetheless Prime Minister Jose Socrates said that while “it’s a slight change to the law ... but it is a very important and symbolic step towards fully ensuring respect for values that are essential in any democratic, open and tolerant society: the values of freedom, equality and non-discrimination.”
Was the defeat of a gay marriage measure in the New Jersey Senate a final reminder of the political ineptitude of state Democrats?
Aston Kajara, the Ugandan minister of state for investments, says that the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 is “not necessary” and that the Member of Parliament who proposed the horrific piece of political malfeasance, David Bahati, will be pressured to pull it from consideration, Kajara a tad obvious that the African’s country fast fading economy is more critical that a conservative Christian led cleansing of the nation’s homosexual community.
An update on a posting from Thursday, with transit officials from two Canadian cities – Calgary and Mississauga – censoring advertisements from Virgin Mobile Canada, a series titled “Hook Up Fearlessly.” The ads were removed from bus stop shelters after “several complaints” from customers who saw them as not suitable. There are four in total to the series; Calgary had accepted three of four, but had rejected outright one depicting a same sex dalliance. It removed two of the three. Oddly, the City of Calgary Transit permits prominent advertisements from Birthright, a pro-life, anti-abortion organization with little to no complaints from city’s customers.
