An interview with the two Malawi men who married a week ago, and were subsequently arrested and jailed on charges of gross indecency and unnatural acts between men, the 20 year old Tiwonge Chimbalanga and 26 year old Steven Monjeza allege that since being put in prison they have been beaten. The two are due in court Monday on an application for bail. While Monjeza appears apologetic and pliant, Chimbalanga remains defiant, saying no laws were broken, adding “We are not supposed to be here. You don’t arrest someone because he loves someone.”
In a private ceremony Saturday, Anise Parker was sworn in as the 61st mayor of Houston, Texas, using her grandparent’s Bible to take the oath. A public ceremony is scheduled for Monday. Parker is the first openly gay mayor of a major American city. The ceremony was private because Parker wanted to avoid incurring any additional costs that would have resulting in paying overtime to police and other city officials for working through the weekend.
The First Lutheran Church of Harvey, North Dakota have voted in favour of leaving the Evangelical Lutheran Church because of an amended national policy that now allows openly gay and lesbian members to serve as pastors or in other clergy positions. To succeed, two votes must be taken, the second tentatively set for late January.
A new book – Star: How Warren Beatty Seduced America – suggest that the 72 year old has slept with an estimated “12,775 women, give or take, a figure that does not include daytime quickies, drive-bys, casual gropings, stolen kisses and so on.” Mr. Beatty’s attorney disputes the claim and the book itself, saying that “Mr. Biskind’s tedious and boring book on Mr. Beatty was not authorized by Mr. Beatty, and should not be published as an authorized biography.”
