The Chicago Sun-Times reports that three men are in custody after 33 year old Dan Hauff was beaten early Sunday aboard the city’s L-train. Hauff, gay, says he was called “stupid faggot” by the three in question after he came to aid of a stranger the group was harassing. Hauff hit the car’s emergency button, but the train continued, and the alleged hate crime occurred.
The Des Moines Register reports on a dilemma facing the Catholic diocese and the parishioners of St. Catherine of Siena church after it was inadvertently revealed that the parish housekeeper, 57 year old Susan McIntyre, who worked at the parish for ten years, was a transgendered woman, who also worked as an independent social worker and used church facilities to counsel transgendered clients, and who was quite quickly fired. The incident has generated an important but rarely held conversation: should the church be held to the standards set by hierarchy or should it follow the teachings of Christ, welcoming all?
The Roanoke Times on the city’s St. John Lutheran Church’s parishioners that Sunday voted 350-104 in favour of leaving the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American over an argument regarding the national organization’s progressive move towards inclusion as evidenced by amendment in August that allowed gay men and women in committed relationships to serve as clergy.
