Uganda’s Daily Monitor Sunday reports – somewhat inexplicably – that Member of Parliament David Bahati, the author of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009, is to attend a prayer breakfast in Washington, D.C. in February, that is to be sponsored by The Fellowship, informally known as The Family, the ultra-Conservative Christian right-wing evangelical organization whose messy history of involvement in promoting anti-gay hatred hysterias is well-documented, including a role in sponsoring Bahati’s horrific legislation.
The Baltimore Sun on the life and death of 52 year old Glen H. Footman, who, walking hand-in-hand with his partner Alex Chavarria in September, 2008, was, shot twice at close range by a young man who was overheard to say “I’m going to kill myself a gay tonight.” After multiple surgeries, Footman died on November 9th. Police have classified the shooting as a possible hate crime, but have no suspects. The story of how monies rightfully belonging to the couple from the state’s Criminal Compensation Injuries Board have been denied because Footman died too soon to collect and the law does not recognize Chavarria as his benefactor is a true American tragedy.
Maureen O’Dowd, writing in the New York Times, profiles Proposition 8 lead plaintiff attorneys David Boies and Ted Olson at the end of the first week of testimony taken for the federal trail challenging the constitutional validity of the gay marriage ban. The two express disappointment that President Obama, once an image of hope for the gay community, not only nationally, but internationally, now appeared so silent on gay issues, so reluctant to lead, allowing O’Dowd to conclude “Obama see himself as such a huge change that he can be cautious about other societal changes. But what he doesn’t realize is that legalizing gay marriage is like electing a black president. Before you do it, it seems inconceivable. Once it’s done, you can’t remember what all the fuss was about.”
