The Associated Foreign Press is reporting that Sweden will lift a ban on gay men donating blood as of March 1st, 2010, but the announcement comes with a caveat. “Men who have sex with men will no longer be permanently banned from donating blood,” the county’s National Board of Health and Welfare said in a statement timed to be released Tuesday, World AIDS Day, “adding that those who engage in “sexually risky behavior” can be barred from donating for up to a year, “that group includes men who have sex with men.”
Not surprisingly, and despite threats by the Catholic Church that teetered on extortion, the Washington D.C. Council voted Tuesday morning 11-2 in favor of a bill legalizing gay marriage in the district, with NBC Washington reporting that only convicted felon and former mayor Marion Barry and Yvette Alexander voting against bill, which was sponsored by openly gay Councilman David Catania. A second and final vote is expected later in December, it is thought to pass easily, and Mayor Adrian Fenty has said he will sign the bill.
The 25th Annual Spirit Awards nominations were announced Tuesday, Precious, The Last Station, and A Single Man among them. Precious director Lee Daniels was nominated, as were Gabourey Sidibe and Mo’Nique, for best actress and best supporting actress respectively. Obviously absent from the list of nominees was the stunning achievement of The Hurt Locker, out of qualification because the Kathryn Bigelow directed feature on America’s role in Iraq played a number of film festivals in 2008.
Telling Ellen DeGeneres that an audience “aren’t used to seeing gay man portrayed that way on TV,” Adam Lambert apparently tried to offer an explanation for his supposedly shocking performance on the American Music Awards. “The gay male image in the media tends to be very clique and safe,” added Adam.
Lambert, meanwhile, was caught flirting with a follower on his Twitter account, although Adam thought he was coming on to one Cody, from Florida, privately, rather than publically.
