New Jersey Committee Clears Gay Marriage Bill, Supreme Court Hears Anti-Gay Christian Student Group Appeal, Utah University, Jesus Lutz, Chad White

After seven hours of debate, the New York Daily News is reporting that by a vote of 7-6, a bill to allow same sex marriage cleared the New Jersey Senate Judicial Committee and now moves t o a full Senate vote this Thursday. The bill was ultimately updated Monday to include stronger protections for religious organizations who do not want to perform gay marriages.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal from a Christian student group at the University of California’s Hastings College of Law, who refused to admit gays. The Court will determine whether the Christian Legal Society’s right to religious liberty can override a university’s ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation.

According to the St. George Daily Spectrum , Southern Utah University board of trustees Friday voted unanimously to amend the Student Rights, Responsibilities and Conduct policies and procedures to include an anti-discrimination protection for gay, lesbian, and transgendered students. Southern Utah Student Body President Cody Alderson said that he thought it was “good that the board of trustees recognized the importance of providing equal protection for students so the campus atmosphere is safe, friendly and accommodating to everyone regardless of their sexual orientation.”
