McDonald’s Terminates Manager Who Refused To Hire Transgendered Teen
McDonald’s issued a statement late Monday evening, saying the multinational had terminated a manger at an Orlando, Florida location that refused to hire a teenager after realizing she was transgendered. 17 year old Zikerria Bellamy had applied for two positions through an online process, but did not check off the box asking whether she was male or female, because the application states the information is optional. However, when she arrived for an interview, a manager made her check the box, and then later left a message on Bellamy’s voice mail that said “You will not get hired. We do not hire faggots. You lied to me. You told me you were a woman.” McDonald’s, after the story broke, said that the Salt Lake Road McDonald’s has a strict policy prohibiting any form of discrimination or harassment in hiring, termination, or any other aspect of employment in the organization. The restaurant requires all employees to comply with local, state, and federal employment laws. The behaviour of the individual in question is not reflective of the employment policies in the organization. Further, this individual acted outside the scope of his authority and was not responsible for hiring. The individual in question is no longer employed by the restaurant.”
