Reuters reports that two Malawi men married Saturday, risking arrest in the southern African state that still regard homosexuality as a crime, punishable with a sentence of up to fourteen years in prison. Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza were wed in a largely symbolic ceremony, Monjeza saying “we met a church where we both pray and we have been together for the last five months ... I have never been interested in a woman.”
Last Wednesday, again according to Reuters, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled that transvestites and eunuchs be permitted to identify themselves as a distinct gender as a part of legal move to ensure their rights, the Court ordering the government to give national identity cards to the members of the community that will display their distinct gender and reduce discrimination and harassment.
