California Assembly Chooses First Openly Gay Speaker, San Francisco Vigil Against Uganda Anti-Gay Bill, Details Emerge On Dallas Maverick Melee

John Perez has made history, becoming the first openly gay Latin-American politician to be chosen the California Assembly speaker, his selection made unanimously Thursday. The 40 year old Democrat from Los Angeles will be formally voted at the State’s 68th Assembly Speaker in January, and Perez said “It’s obviously an incredibly moving experience to have the unanimous support of my colleagues. I think it says more about California than it does about me – it means that California is a place where everybody has a seat at the table, that we’re a state where everybody brings forward their contributions.”

In San Francisco, a vigil was held Thursday, organized to publically condemn the Anti-Homosexuality Bill currently up for proposal in the Ugandan parliament. City Supervisor Bevan Duffy said that it is time for the Obama administration to follow the lead of other countries and threaten to cut aid to Uganda if the Bill is signed into law. “Legislation that would mandate the execution of people who are gay or HIV positive runs absolutely counter to any humanity principles. It’s also bad science and it will certainly contribute to furthering the AIDS pandemic in Africa and particularly in Uganda.” Next week, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and the entire city council will formally condemn the Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

The Dallas Morning News reports that on Thursday police continued to investigate an alleged incident that occurred early Wednesday morning at an area Denny’s, an altercation between Dallas Mavericks forward Tim Thomas, his entourage, and Damien Pettie. According to police reports, Thomas hurled anti-gay and racial slurs at Pettie, before an en masse melee broke out. The police were called, but Thomas and his group had long since left. The Morning News does mention something that has not been revealed, and that is that the 29 year old Pettie works as a stripper at a gay club near the Denny’s and that while not himself gay, his two companions that morning are, the suggestion being that if Thomas or others in his group perceived Pettie to be gay, the case should be investigated as a hate crime.
