Austria Approves Civil Unions, Gay Penguins Perfect Family, Ben Rakestrow Comes Out, GLSEN Steps It Up, Robert Buckley Beauty, Lady Gaga Feminist

The Associated Press reports that Thursday, the Austrian Parliament approved a bill that will allow same sex couples in that country to enter into civil unions. The bill, which takes effect January 1st, will afford same sex couples that same privileges and rights as those afforded opposite sex couples, including access to pensions if one partner passes and alimony if the couple breaks up. The bill, while being hailed as historic and important, is a compromise, and includes a formal ban on gay adoption as well as artificial insemination for same sex couples.

The Sun reports that the two gay penguins – Guido and Molly – and the couple’s 5 month old male chick are just perfect, thank you, the three a priceless part of the East London Aquarium in South Africa, and a model of a healthy family unit.

The Guardian reports on Ben Rakestrow, a 21 year old British Trooper, serving in Afghanistan, who made the decision to come out to his troop, experiencing little more than harmless banter.

The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network or GLSEN’s Think Before Speak series of public service announcements is in its second year, the first year’s That’s So Gay campaign, led in part by Hilary Duff and Wanda Sykes was so successful that GLSEN has decided to be more aggressive in changing the perception of what constitutes homophobia and in limiting the use of anti-gay slurs, that according to the New York Times.

The great Los Angeles Times music critic Ann Powers profiles Lady Gaga, interviewing Stefani Germanotta post-concert in Boston, Massachusetts, Gaga a mass of contradictions, contending “I don’t see myself as ever being like anybody else. I don’t see myself as an heir,” that despite obvious references by Gaga to David Bowie, Madonna, and drag queens worldwide, past and present. From there, she talks about feminism, and is, in discussion, unsurprisingly, smart and thoughtful.
